Charlton is one of those neighbourhoods where people have lived for generations. Long-established streets, a strong community feel, and families who've been in the same homes for decades. For a lot of older people in Charlton, home is the most important thing — and the idea of leaving it is genuinely distressing.
That's the context we work in. Utmost Healthcare is based on Bugsby's Way in SE7, which is practically on the doorstep of Charlton. We provide home care to people in Charlton, and across Woolwich, North Greenwich and the surrounding SE7 area. We know the streets. We understand the community. And we understand what it means to someone when a carer comes into their home — it's a matter of trust, not just logistics.
We're not going to tell you we're perfect or that every situation goes smoothly. Care is complicated, and people's needs change. What we will tell you is that when something needs sorting, we sort it — and you'll be able to reach us when you need to.
Most people who come to us in Charlton are in one of a few situations. There's the elderly person living alone who's managing but starting to struggle with certain things — getting up safely, keeping the home clean, remembering medication. There's the family where one sibling has been doing most of the caring and is burning out. There's the person coming out of hospital who needs support while they recover. And there are people with longer-term conditions — dementia, Parkinson's, stroke recovery — who need care that adapts as their needs change over time.
We work with all of these. The common thread isn't the condition — it's that the person wants to stay in their own home in Charlton, and we help make that possible.
When we first speak to families, a lot of them say the same thing: "We tried someone else and it didn't work out." They've had a carer who turned up late, or changed without warning, or just didn't seem to care much. It takes a lot of courage to try again after that — and we take that seriously.
We're not going to promise you the world. But we will promise you this: we'll be honest with you from the start. We'll tell you clearly what we can offer, what it costs, how quickly we can start, and if there's anything we can't do. We won't overpromise and underdeliver.
Every carer we place in Charlton has been DBS checked and gone through our training. More importantly, we've met them. We know what they're like with clients. We don't just look at availability — we think about whether this person is the right fit for this specific client.
Our office is on Bugsby's Way, a five-minute drive from Charlton village. That proximity isn't just a selling point — it has practical consequences. Our carers working in Charlton aren't travelling across London to get there. We can respond quickly when something comes up. And when a family needs to speak to someone face to face, we're not a long journey away.
We're also used to working alongside the community health teams covering SE7, the district nursing services and the social care teams from the London Borough of Greenwich. If your family member has other professionals involved in their care, we fit in around that — not the other way round.
The two main routes are private payment — where you pay directly — or a personal budget from the London Borough of Greenwich following a care needs assessment. If you've already had an assessment and been told you're entitled to support, you can choose to use that funding with us. If you haven't had an assessment and you're unsure whether your family member might qualify, it's worth requesting one through Greenwich Adult Social Care.
We're happy to talk through the funding question on the phone — it's one of the things people find most confusing when they're first looking into care, and we'd rather help you understand it properly than leave you guessing.
For planned care we typically need a few days to do the initial home visit and sort the carer matching. For urgent situations — particularly if someone's just come out of hospital — call us directly and we'll tell you honestly what's possible and how fast we can move.
We aim for consistency wherever possible and we're honest about it when we can't. If a different carer is needed — for a holiday, illness or any other reason — we'll let you know in advance. We don't just send whoever's available and hope no one notices.
Talk to us. We'd always rather have a difficult conversation early than let something fester. If a carer isn't the right match, we'll find someone better. If there's something we can improve about how the care is delivered, we want to know.
We cover Charlton and the wider SE7 area including Woolwich, North Greenwich and surrounding streets. We also cover Greenwich town, Eltham SE9 and Kidbrooke. For our full Kent coverage see our Northfleet, Gravesend, Maidstone and Rochester pages.
We're a five-minute drive away. Give us a call and let's have a real conversation about what you're dealing with and whether we can help. No scripts, no pressure.
